A live version of hit TV show Fawlty Towers has canned its New Zealand tour, citing last week's Kaikoura earthquake among the reasons.

The Fawlty Towers - Live tour was due to perform in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington in February and March.

But the tour has been cancelled "due to a number of factors - including last week's significant earthquake".

"The producers have arrived at the difficult decision not to proceed with the New Zealand tour," a press released issued this morning said.

Fawlty Towers - Live - based on on the hilarious and much-loved BBC TV series - features an all-new cast hand-picked by creator and co-writer, John Cleese.

Cleese draws from his personal favourite moments from the TV series in this stage adaptation, which follows the antics of Basil Fawlty, one of British TV's most iconic characters.

It has received rave reviews so far, with UK's The Sun calling it "a two-hour romp of high-farce fun and frolics", adding that it was "unforgettable & endlessly hilarious".

The AU Review called it "a show fans can't afford to miss" and Broadway World said it was "a fabulous trip down memory lane".

The original TV show debuted in 1975 and a second season screened in 1979. It is widely considered among the greatest TV comedies ever made.

The tour will still go ahead in Australia. Refunds are available at point of purchase.
