Fans share David Bowie memories during Labyrinth screening

A David Bowie movie classic has screened on New Zealand TV tonight in tribute to the late singer, who died from cancer this week.

TV3 advertised the screening of Labyrinth on Thursday and said it was in tribute to "the legendary David Bowie".

"TV3 want you to relive his most iconic movie role of the 80s," the broadcaster said in a message on its website.

The film screened tonight at 7pm.

The English superstar died in New York on Sunday (local time). He was 69.

Kiwi fans were quick to take to social media to celebrate the movie tonight, with both Labyrinth and #LabyrinthParty currently trending on Twitter.

The 1986 American adventure fantasy film stars Bowie as Jareth, the Goblin King - the main antagonist of the film.

He wrote five songs for the film - Underground, Magic Dance, Chilly Down, As the World Falls Down and Within You.

Film and TV website IMDb summarises Labyrinth by saying: "A selfish 16-year-old girl is given 13 hours to solve a labyrinth and rescue her baby brother when her wish for him to be taken away is granted by the Goblin King."

The girl, named Sarah, is played by Jennifer Connelly.
