MTV reports the project was executive produced by the lyricist's longtime collaborators Dr Dre and Rick Rubin.
Eminem also logged onto Instagram before the awards ceremony, sharing a photo of the VMA logo.
"Guess who's REALLY back? #VMAs," he teased.
Fans have been clamouring to find out more details about Eminem's new record since the Lose Yourself lyricist hinted he was working on the project last year.
"I've actually kinda just started (on a new album). I've been on the move a little bit too, so I've in between things, sneak songs in here and there," Eminem told MTV News in August 2012.
His frequent collaborator, DJ Alchemist, recently teased a few details on US TV show RapFix Live.
''(Eminem is) clearly going to further territories. I think what you would expect, especially after the last go-round,'' he said.
"That's my boss. I DJ for him and I'm not at liberty to speak on much, but you know his calibre and what he does."
The project will mark Eminem's eighth solo album.
His previous releases include: Infinite (1996), The Slim Shady LP (1998), The Marshall Mathers LP (2000), The Eminem Show (2002), Encore (2004), Relapse (2009) and Recovery (2010).
