The Dunedin Airport has changed its sign for the arrival of the star highlighting the "ed" portion of the word Dunedin in blue.
Immediately after venturing into the city centre Sheeran took a selfie with the divisive $8000 Tyler Kennedy Stent mural on Bath St adding it to his Instagram story with "#muralselfie".
Sheeran arrived on a small plane from Masterton and got in a brown van with a driver and two women.
The Instagram story was taken on his way out of the airport.
There are about 15 people already queuing up at Forsyth Barr Stadium in anticipation for Sheeran's first concert tomorrow night.
Up to 60,000 people are expected to pack into the city over the Easter weekend for his three concerts on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Preparations for his arrival started taking shape around the city today as volunteers blocked off the city centre to vehicles with artificial turf, planter boxes, small trees, furniture, umbrellas, festoon lighting, games and activities.
Earlier this week the Dunedin City Council was encouraging people to ditch their cars and use public transport or walk instead.
The Dunedin City Council was reported to be spending up to $60,000 on closing the lower Octagon and lower Stuart St for six days, and temporarily transforming the area into an ''inviting streetscape'' and ''central hub'' for Ed Sheeran fans.
Commuter train travel was also returning to the city for the weekend, with a train running between Mosgiel and Dunedin on the day of the concerts.
The thousands of visitors descending on the city over four days, bringing a predicted $34 million into the local economy.
