KEY POINTS:
Vincent Ward's new film, Rain of the Children, opening in cinemas next Thursday, revisits one of his earliest works, the award-winning documentary In Spring One Plants Alone.
Released in 1981, the fly-on-the-wall documentary was the product of two years living in a remote valley deep in theUreweras. It is a portrait of daily life for an elderly woman, Puhi, and her schizophrenic adult son, Niki.
By a combination of happy coincidence and educated guesswork, the Auckland Film Society has scheduled In Spring One Plants Alone for Monday. It will be paired, as it commonly is, with Ward's first film, State of Siege, based on a Janet Frame novel, to make a 90-minute programme. The screening is open to the public.
