News of her hospitalisation initially sparked concern among her fans, as the singer has often spoken out about the "dark period" in her life when she self-harmed, battled depression and eating disorders, and ended up in rehab.
Speaking in 2011, she said: "I basically had a nervous breakdown. I was really bad off. My parents and manager pulled me aside and said, 'You need to get some help.'
"It was an intervention. I wanted freedom from the inner demons. I wanted to start my life over.
"If you are going through that dark period, go to your family and closest friends.
"Don't put yourself in danger. It's very crucial that you get your feelings out - but don't ever inflict harm on your own body because your body is so sacred.
"I wish I could tell every young girl with an eating disorder, or who has harmed herself in any way, that she's worthy of life and that her life has meaning.
You can overcome and get through anything."
She also admitted in December that she had almost suffered a partial relapse last summer and credited her long-term boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama, for encouraging her to seek help again.
She said at the time: "It's been difficult. I almost went back to rehab for my eating disorder last summer. I was obsessing over food and terrified of it at the same time. Wilmer noticed and called me out on it, which was a relief."
