Could Lindsay Lohan play Elizabeth Taylor?

LiLo and behold, could 2012 be the year that Lindsay Lohan pulls a blinder and rescues her acting career from the doldrums?

Hold that thought.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lohan, who recently bared all in a saucy Marilyn Monroe-themed shoot for Playboy magazine, is in early talks to play none other than one of Hollywood's most iconic actresses - the late, great Elizabeth Taylor.

The website confirms that LiLo, 25, is being considered to play Taylor in a made-for-TV-movie for American cable network Lifetime.

The biopic, titled Elizabeth & Richard: A Love Story, will reportedly chronicle the highly-publicised love affair between Taylor and Richard Burton. The Hollywood legend was married to Burton twice - from 1964 to 1974 and again from 1975 to 1976.

The project, which was announced in May as part of Lifetime's 2011-12 development slate, will be helmed by producer Larry Thompson (think Amish Grace).

Problem-plagued Lohan, whose off-screen shenanigans - misdemeanour DUI, probation violations, rehab and jail stints - have frequently overshadowed her career, has been attached to several projects of late.

Lohan lobbied hard last year to play Victoria Gotti alongside John Travolta in Gotti: Three Generations, a biopic about late mobster John Gotti.

But she's yet to ink a deal for the mobster flick.

"The producers of the film and Lindsay's representation have not yet worked out an agreement for her to appear in the movie. At this point, we cannot provide a definitive answer either way," producer Steve Honig told E! News back in August.

As for the LiLo's much-mooted turn as porn star Linda Lovelace in biopic Inferno? No dice.

"We are withdrawing our offer from Lindsay Lohan," director Matthew Wilder told E! News in November. "We have stuck by Lindsay very patiently for a long time with a lot of love and support."

He continued: "Ultimately, the impossibility of insuring her and some other issues have made it impossible for us to go forward.

"We are currently in negotiations [with another actress] and working out the legalities of bringing her onboard."

She was eventually replaced by actress Malin Akerman.

Then there's the idea of Lohan stepping into Sissy Spacek's shoes in a remake of Steven King's Carrie.

Entertainment Weekly reported last year that a remake of the horror classic is in the pipeline.

King also speculated that Lohan would be ideal in the title role.

"I've heard rumblings about a Carrie remake, as I have about The Stand and It," King told EW.com. "Who knows if it will happen? The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, not Casablanca or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book.

"Although Lindsay Lohan as Carrie White... hmmm. It would certainly be fun to cast. I guess I could get behind it if they turned the project over to one of the Davids: Lynch or Cronenberg."

But LiLo as Liz? Really? Believe it or not, Lohan and Liz - who died of congestive heart failure in March 2011, at the age of 79 - have something in common. Apparently.

A 2010 article in Slate spouts: "Both had domineering stage mothers, little semblance of a real childhood, fame from a young age, substance abuse issues, public emotional outpourings, and copious amounts of tabloid drama.

"The key difference, though, is that Elizabeth Taylor had a true record of achievement before she became the most notorious movie star in America. She had made almost 30 movies by the time she and Burton were making headlines."

Lohan's rep refused to comment on the report, telling CNN: "We're not commenting on hearsay or comments made by unnamed sources."
