Competing movie theatres not lowering prices

Movie buffs will be pleased that Auckland's newest cinema complex will boast permanently low ticket prices - but managers at competing movie theatres say they won't be affected

The average price of an adult movie ticket in Auckland cinemas is about $17.30, but Reading Cinemas at LynnMall, due to open in two weeks, has announced its ticket prices will be set at $10 for all ages.

The price would apply to all cinemas except for its Titan XC 20m-wide screen and premium dine-in option.

Reading Cinemas managing director Wayne Smith said prices across the country were not "one size fits all".

He hoped the low ticket price at the Auckland cinema - the same price as tickets at Reading Cinemas in Christchurch and Dunedin - would be sustainable.

"We do want to make a profit. We wanted to create something special that's good for customers," he said.

Event Cinemas general manager Carmen Switzer declined to comment, and simply stated: "It doesn't impact us."

Northcote's The Bridgeway Cinema manager also declined to comment.
