He said Mr Cumming had a natural ability on stage.
"I was expecting him to have a bit of a car accident actually, only having spoken to him a little bit, you can't have high expectations if you haven't seen anyone.
"He actually surprised me. He did well, he got a foot in the door and now the journey's his."
The amateur comedian was making up jokes on the spot and wrapped up his segment with a prepared gag that was a real hit, Lovegrove said.
He brought along about 10 people, including his dad, to the show.
Members of the audience heckled the newbie a bit but he was not offended, Lovegrove said.
"A couple of people turned around and gave it to him because they knew who he was but it was all good-natured. We had a good crowd in.
"Last night was a really good result considering what happened two weeks ago. There was a good positive spin on it and I was able to contact the guy and he did well. I was stoked for him."
Mr Cumming will also perform at Tyler St Garage tomorrow night and said on Facebook that he was pleased to be getting rebooked.
"[The] gig went really well, got some good laughs," he wrote.
