Charlize Theron says she's been 'incredibly misquoted'

Charlize Theron says her comments to GQ were taken out of context.

Charlize Theron has fired back at editors of British GQ for the "incredible misquote" attributed to her in the new issue of the men's magazine.

The Mad Max: Fury Road star appeared to be grumbling about the fact she was a Hollywood beauty in the new interview, but she insists her comments were taken out of context and misquoted.

"Jobs with real gravitas go to people that are physically right for them and that's the end of the story," she reportedly told the magazine.

"How many roles are out there for the gorgeous, f**king, gown-wearing eight-foot model? When meaty roles come through, I've been in the room and pretty people get turned away first."

The comments attributed to the former teen model sparked debate on gossip sites and among news outlets, as critics poked fun at Theron for apparently feeling sorry for herself.

But the actress insists most people misunderstood what she was trying to say.

Speaking to Access Hollywood at the premiere of her new film, The Huntsman: Winter's War, on Monday night, the Oscar winner said: "It was such an incredible misquote. I'm somewhat shocked by how I got so misquoted.

"What I was really trying to say was people always ask me why I play so many characters that are so deconstructed and my point with that was that how many characters really are there out there for a woman wearing a gown? You have to kind of play real people."

She added: "It's always somewhat shocking when you do those things (magazine interviews) because context is everything, and if somebody doesn't really get that or it doesn't translate, people can really kind of read stuff so wrongly ... I couldn't be more humbled by the career I've been given."

Theron also told Extra: "I've never really spoken in that way... The idea that I would ever say anything that made it sound like I was ungrateful for the career that I have today ...

"That was rough, that was rough reading that."
