American pop star Chappell Roan has been banned from performing at a festival in Brazil after one of her security guards allegedly made Jude Law’s daughter cry.
Roan was staying in the same hotel in Sao Paulo as the family of the footballer Jorginho, whose wife shares a child withLaw from a previous relationship. They were due to watch the pop star perform at the Lollapalooza Brazil music festival at the weekend.
But the former Chelsea and Arsenal player posted on Instagram to describe “a very upsetting situation” during breakfast at the hotel, which he said had left his 11-year-old stepdaughter “extremely shaken”.
“The artist walked past their table. My daughter, like any child, got excited and just wanted to make sure it was really her,” he wrote. “She simply walked past the singer’s table, looked to confirm it was her, and went back to sit with her mum.”
Jorginho said a security guard later came over to the table where his wife, singer Catherine Harding, and stepdaughter Ada were sitting and accused them of “harassment”.
He added that the security guard “began speaking in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and daughter, saying that she shouldn’t allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ other people”.

The post quickly went viral, catching the eye of Eduardo Cavaliere, Rio De Janeiro’s mayor, who said that “as long as I’m in charge” Roan would never perform at the city’s Todo Mundo no Rio festival series.
Harding later said the family had chosen to skip Roan’s performance, writing on social media: “Our daughter decided she didn’t want to go to the show tonight after how we were treated.”
Responding to the backlash on Instagram, Roan said she had “always been very clear about my boundaries”, writing: “I just woke up. I deserve my space, especially in moments like breakfast.”
She later apologised in a video posted to social media. “I’m sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something, that you would do something, and that if you felt uncomfortable, that makes me really sad,” she said. “You did not deserve that.”

Roan – whose hits include Pink Pony Club and Hot To Go! – has repeatedly pushed back against invasive fans and paparazzi.
“I chose this career path because I love music and art and honouring my inner child. I do not accept harassment of any kind because I chose this path, nor do I deserve it,” she wrote in 2024.
The Lollapalooza Brazil performance marked the end of a months-long tour. “This is the 33rd show of the Damsels tour. I do not know when I’ll be going on tour again, so last one, I’m so grateful it’s here,” she said on stage.
“I’m so grateful, so thank you. And thank you to my crew and my security and my band and everyone behind the scenes. This takes a lot of people, so thank you.”
The 29-year-old singer-songwriter, born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, grew up in a small town in Missouri. She released her debut studio album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, in 2023, but hit singles from the record only made the charts much later, with Pink Pony Club making the top 10 in the UK and US last year, when she was also awarded a Grammy for best new artist and a Brit Award for best international artist.
