Celebrity social: Lena Dunham's sad 'snowmageddon' selfie

Five states declared a state of emergency as a "crippling and potentially historic" snowstorm ravaged the Northeast of the United States.

And due to the massive blizzard, many celebrities were among those affected by the 1,800 flights canceled across the region.

Lena Dunham was one of the stars that were left stranded due to the inclement weather as she posed a sad face selfie on her Instagram while describing how she has dealt with being stuck after attending the Sundance Film Festival in Utah over the weekend.

The 28-year-old Girls star and creator shared the picture with her 1.3million fans with the message: "Hope you're enjoying this suspenseful will-she-or-won't-she blizzard story (aka sorry!)

"There was a med student writing a paper on UTIs next to me at the gate and I was like DO YOU NEED FIRST PERSON STORIES!?

"A gate agent in a nice hat called me precious and I teared up. I have only A 1 sauce waiting for me in my house in NYC. Not even complaining."

But 11 hours later, the two-time Golden Globe winner managed to make it back to Brooklyn in one piece, writing: "Home safe and hoping you are too. Love and warmth to all."

Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones donned a fur-collared coat and furry scarf for this snap advising her fans: "Freezing before the storm!! Go to the movies east coasters!!!!!"

Hilaria Baldwin was also helpless as she shared a written message with her fans on the picture sharing social network.

The 30-year-old wife of Alec Baldwin wrote: "Can't get back to NYC because of the blizzard... thinking about all of you back home. Be safe."

The Backstreet Boys were scheduled to make an appearance and co-host The View, but due to the storm the plans may have change.

Their official Twitter posted: "Due to the #blizzardof2015, we're unable to travel to NYC. We're working on alternatives and will let you know as soon as they're confirmed."

Even bad boy Justin Bieber expressed his concern as he wrote : "Everyone on the east coast be safe with the storm coming."

Television presenter Carson Daly shared a snap of an American Airlines plane on the runway which was covered in snow.

The host of The Voice captioned the image: "Because why wouldn't you want to fly in the WORST STORM IN THE HISTORY OF EVER AND EVER."

Debra Messing did not let the storm get in the way of work as she shared a selfie with a plastic covering over her head and face while bundled up in a cosy jacket.

She appeared to be on set of The NBC programme The Mysteries Of Laura as she wrote: "THERES A BLIZZARD??? I'm still filming @NBCLaura ! #doublebonnet #Blizzard."

If you're Aussie movie star Hugh Jackman, you carb load.

Jackman uploaded a photo to Instagram of himself tucking into a bowl of pasta at his home in New York."Bring it on!!! #Snowstorm2015 #CarbLoad," he said.

The massive blizzard described as "a hurricane of snow" is set to slam America's heavily-populated north-east.

The storm is expected to bring near hurricane-force 105km/h winds and dump more than 90cm of snow on Monday and Tuesday in a region where almost 60 million people live, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm will affect a 250-mile stretch including 60 million people across seven states with more than 6,000 flights being cancelled over the next two days.
