Watch Cate Blanchett's interview with Channel Ten journalist Jonathan Hyla take an unexpected turn. Footage: Channel Ten: The Project ...
Cate Blanchett lost her cool with an Australian TV journalist during what can only be described as a very awkward interview on television program The Project.
The actress came prepared to answer questions about her new Disney film Cinderella, but was faced with an unexpected line of questioning when the interview veered off topic.
The Oscar-winning star was visibly flabbergasted by Channel Ten journalist Jonathan Hyla's increasingly eccentric queries in the cringe-inducing junket, and played along with it as best she could.
Starting the interview in an unconventional fashion, Jonathan suggested he should have brought a few beers along for them to drink during their chat.
"I do not drink beers," Blanchett retorted, feigning outrage at the cheeky comment.
Trying to recover from her blunt comeback, he then asked: "What should I have brought with me that would have helped break the ice here?", to which she suggested a "potato vodka" made in Devon.
Blanchett skilfully attempted to steer the interview back to the Kenneth Branagh-directed film, while making a not-so-subtle dig at the journalist.
"Getting back to the movie at hand - one of us has got to do our job - the chemistry between them (Cinderella stars Lily James and Richard Madden) is amazing," the superstar joked.
The 45-year-old revealed the actors' on-screen chemistry is all the more captivating because their fairytale romance is so innocent.
"They could push it over into an R-rating except they don't really do anything. I mean they do so much, but they don't 'do' anything," she said.
Blanchett decided to call a truce, telling Jonathan, "Let's start over."
But the presenter put his foot in it yet again when he asked another lighthearted question, bringing the interview to close.
"Okay, serious question, how were you able to get that cat to do what you wanted it to do on a leash?," he said, referring to the Russian Blue her wicked stepmother character keeps in the film.
