Bachelor NZ contestant's fart makes international headlines

A contestant farting on the New Zealand version of The Bachelor has made headlines worldwide.

The incident happened on Wednesday night's episode of the TV3 show, when Poppy - one of the show's 22 contestants - let one rip during her first date with Bachelor hunk Art Green.

"Oh, it is beautiful ... This is pretty magical," says Poppy, before passing wind while sitting down next to Green under a tree on a beach.

"Did you just fart?" asks Green. "I slipped in the sand," the British yoga teacher replies. "Squeaky sand, eh?" laughs Green.

"Poppy lets out a little fart and it's just so funny," says Green to the camera, laughing off the incident.

"I loved the way she just owned up to it - it was hilarious."

Later on, Green says to Poppy: "It's always just a matter of time before someone farts in someone else."

A red-faced Poppy replies: "Usually it's not on the first date."

The incident has attracted international attention, with The New York Post running the story with the headline: "The Bachelor fart that stopped a nation."

People.com asked: "Aren't regular yoga practitioners used to keeping that sort of thing from happening unexpectedly?"

The Daily Mirror covered the story with the headline, Is this the most embarrassing first date ever?

And the Daily Mail said: "Introducing The Flatul-orette!"

Perhaps most telling is Poppy's bio on the Bachelor NZ website: ""Nothing happens to those who aren't afraid to look silly every once and a while."

Green, the 26-year-old co-owner of a paleo food company, is looking for love on the show, which sees 22 contestants vying for his affections.
