Amanda shot to fame at the age of 10 in 1996 with role in hit TV show All That and Nickelodeon's Figure It Out.
At 13, touted as America's rising star in both comedy and acting, she was given her own sketch show: The Amanda Show.
The next 10 years were a roaring success for Amanda, who made a smooth transition into movies, notably starring in She's The Man and Hairspray. In 2003, she made it onto the cover of Vanity Fair - a feat even for Hollywood stars.

Amanda's troubles began in 2010, then aged 24, after she announced she was retiring from acting and appeared in a racy photo shoot for Maxim magazine, insisting 'this is me'. It was an apparent bid to break from her child-star image.
In the following four years, she was arrested for DUI, accused of crashing into a police car and another motorist, pictured taking drugs, allegedly banned from a number of establishments for 'erratic behaviour', and in 2013 placed in involuntary psychiatric care.
Today, Amanda was met by the family's attorney Tamar Arminak and a team of doctors, who put her on a 5150 psychiatric hold, where she will be held for up to 14 days, according to TMZ.
She was filmed leaving the airport where she told paparazzi she plans to sue her parents.
Posing for the cameras and holding up a peace sign with her hands, she said: 'I'm going to sue my father and my mother for deserted me, I'm one of the smartest girls on the face of the earth, I'm also a multi-millionaire, and I'm awesome.'
She added: 'I will never speak to my father again. I cannot wait for him to be dead in his grave, like honestly my dad is like the most unbeautiful person on the face of the earth.'
As she got in the back of a four-wheel drive, she told the group of camera men she wants to be 'like Marilyn Monroe' before saying: 'You guys are like my family!'
Amanda's 14-tweet outcry came just two days after she was filmed gyrating on her bodyguard in Barney's, New York, as she tried on a shirt.
She was then issued with a 'do not trespass' order, banning her from the shop, after she tried to exit the store wearing a $200 hat she had not bought.
This afternoon police were said to be hunting for the former Nickelodeon comedy performer after she tried and failed to buy a ticket out of New York at JFK Airport and then fled.
Her parents were said to be traveling from California to the west coast to find Amanda, but reports claim she has now touched down in LA.

She was arrested for DUI on September 28 on a California Highway at 4am.
Her parents claim that was the last they saw or heard from the star before she was pictured and tweeting from New York City this week.
Today, her mother Lynne Bynes has spoken out about the troubled star's outburst on Twitter in which she accused her father of physically and mentally abusing her.

Mrs Bynes said in a statement: 'I am heartbroken today for my husband of 47 years.
'Rick has been the best father and husband a family can ask for.
'He has never abused Amanda or our other children physically or sexually.
'These accusations are absolutely horrible and could not be further from the truth!
'These allegations stem from Amanda's mental state at the moment. They have no basis in reality.
'It saddens me beyond belief that my husband's character could be slandered in such a way.'
Their lawyer, Tamar Arminak, also told MailOnline: 'My clients are heartbroken by these false accusations. Their older children [Jillian and Tommy] are also horrified at the situation.'
Arminak also spoke to TMZ on the siblings' behalf, who defender their father.
Jillian O'Keefe and Tommy Bynes stated: 'We are disturbed beyond words that Amanda would come up with such a fabrication as a way to avoid getting much needed help or treatment.
'We are pained by [Amanda's] behavior but we absolutely give our full unconditional love and support to our wonderful parents.'
The disturbing tweets accusing Rick Bynes of sexual assault emerged on Amanda's Twitter feed at around lunchtime in New York today.
Explaining why she did not want to live with her father and mother in California - where she was held in a psychiatric facility - the actress said on Twitter she could not be in the same house as her father.
The embattled star wrote: 'My dad was verbally and physically abuse to me as a child.
A few minutes later, she wrote to her 3.24 million followers: 'My dad fondled himself in front of me so many times that I started recording him on my phone in hopes of catching him... saying or doing something inappropriate around me so I could get him arrested & put in jail for the rest of his perverted life.'
But two hours later, she retracted the statements, saying: 'My dad never did any of those things. The microchip in my brain made me say those things but he's the one that ordered them to microchip me.'
On Friday, video of the star also emerged showing her dancing around and behaving unusually at boutique Pookie & Sebastian emerged.
In the security footage filmed on Wednesday, obtained by the MailOnline, Amanda dances around before rubbing herself against her bodyguard as he tried to help her get a fanny pack off.
Unable to get it off, the star has to buy the accessory, and leaves 'behaving erratically'.
Just an hour later, the child star was accused of trying to shoplift from Barneys on New York's Madison Avenue after she reportedly tried to leave wearing a $200 hat that she had not purchased.
The 28-year was allegedly detained by store security but later released, according to TMZ.
She claimed she was being chased by fans and took the hat for cover.
