TimeOut: Who do you admire most on the Soulfest line-up?
Musiq Soulchild: D'Angelo is pretty much at the top of my list of people I respect as a creative person. He's always maintained an ability to do things his own way. He's been away so long but he has enoughcredibility to come back. You've got to make a huge impact to disappear and be able to reappear.
What can fans expect from your show?
I'm just gonna come out to have a good time and sing some good soul music and get you guys to have fun with me. I've never taken myself too seriously. I know the industry likes to promote us soul singers as being sooo deep, but personally I just like to have fun, sing songs and get everybody to have a good time.
You wrote a relationship guide called 143 - Love According To Musiq. What kind of feedback did you get?
I've had a lot of people come to me and say things like, "I've never seen the concept of a relationship put in such simple terms." I was hesitant about going forward with it, (relationship counselling) is an actual profession, people go to psychology school and get a degree, I don't have any of these things, I just have my point of view, from my personal experiences and conversations, or just picking up on the facts of life and things everyone goes through. I just applied it to many different levels.
Have you faced criticism over the fact that you wrote a relationship guide having never been married?
Yes but I'm not really talking about marriage. What I'm talking about is two people trying to make a life with each other. I can't talk about marriage but I can talk about two people trying to get along and co-exist. I know all about that.
