Black God White Devil (1963) by Glauber Rocha is one of the films on offer.
Sunday night at the movies will offer a wider choice for cinema lovers this year as the Auckland Film Society, which has traditionally held its weekly screenings on Mondays, shifts to the weekend.
A packed programme includes: a selection of Brazilian films from the 1960s - including Black
God White Devil (1963) by Glauber Rocha - a fertile and revolutionary decade for that country's film industry; a seven-film retrospective by the influential postwar American director Sam Fuller, including a recut of his legendary 1980 war film The Big Red One; a selection of films by Francois Truffaut, including his Cannes-winning debut of The 400 Blows; and new films from France.
The society's membership subscription of $150, with discounts available, equates to less than $5 a movie and members get reciprocal rights at other film societies, discounted tickets for some screenings at commercial cinemas, and concessions at midwinter film festivals.
The society's programme starts on Sunday, March 11 at 8pm with a screening of Truffaut's new-wave classic Jules and Jim.
