While 2018 might have been the year of the surprise celebrity engagement, it was also a year where breakups blindsided fans.

The year was a bad one for Hollywood's power couples, with Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, and Ruby Rose and Jess Origliasso all parting ways.

Take a look at the good, the bad and the (very) ugly A-lister splits that happened this year.

In February, Aniston and Theroux announced they were separating after just two years of marriage.

In a statement, Aniston and Theroux said the decision to part was "mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year".

"Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly," the statement read.

"Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else's fictional narrative. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another."

Since splitting from Aniston, Theroux has been linked to a number of women including Maniac co-star Emma Stone, 26-year-old artist Petra Collins and more recently BlacKkKlansman actor Laura Harrier.

In November Aniston told US Weekly she had needed "a lot of therapy" following her split from Theroux and she was making sure to "take care of herself".

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson's relationship seemed to come out of nowhere, with the couple getting engaged in June just weeks after they started dating.

The two seemed madly in love, with Ariana even dedicating a song on her latest album to the comedian.

But Grande and Davidson called it quits in October, just a month after the singer's ex, rapper Mac Miller, died of a suspected overdose.

Since then, the couple's split has continued to make headlines, with Grande releasing breakup song Thank U, Next last month and Davidson slamming her fans for attacking him online.

Earlier this month Davidson appeared to accuse Grande of making light of mental health issues when the singer blasted Kanye West for attacked Drake on Twitter.

"We need people like Kanye. No one should ever point fingers at you for your bravery in speaking about mental health. I'm seriously disgusted," Davidson wrote.

Soon after posting about West, Davidson — who has borderline personality disorder — wrote on Instagram, "I don't want to be on this earth anymore," and deleted his account, prompting police to do a welfare check on the comedian.

Grande also rushed to Davidson's side, saying that she was sorry for her joke and tweeting that she was "not going anywhere if you need anyone or anything".

After splitting from wife Jennifer Garner in 2015, Affleck found love again with Saturday Night Live producer Lindsay Shookus in 2017.

But the couple's relationship came to an abrupt end in August this year, with Peoplereporting Shookus broke up with Affleck because his struggles with addiction were spiralling out of control.

Affleck didn't stay single for long, with the Argo star dating Playboy model Shauna Sexton for two months.

The pair split after Affleck completed rehab for alcohol addiction following a reported intervention from ex-wife Garner.

Ruby Rose and Jess Origliasso appeared to have split on good terms when they announced their breakup after almost two years of dating in April.

But in November Origliasso accused Rose of "continued harassment" when the actor commented on a photo of the singer with new partner Kai Carlton.
"Congratulations! So happy for you both," Rose wrote under the picture of her ex-girlfriend.

It seemed innocent enough, but sparked a furious response from Origliasso.
"@rubyrose I have requested you not contact me for over four months now.

You have been given my grace of being ignored on every other private platform, so the fact you continue to ignore this to contact me here publicly under the guise of wishing me well is continued harassment," she wrote.

"That is news to me. Copy that. Good vibes only," Rose replied.

CARDI B AND OFFSET

They were hip-hop's power couple for a hot minute. While rappers Cardi B and Offset welcomed their baby girl Kulture in July this year, their picture-perfect romance was short-lived.

Earlier this month Cardi B took to Instagram to announce their split in a now-deleted video. While she said the two "grew out of love", leaked texts between Offset and rapper Summer Bunni surfaced online and appeared to show Offset tying to cheat on a then-pregnant Cardi.

Since the split, Cardi B has been thriving, fiercely rapping about her divorce and nabbing a whole bunch of Grammy nominations.

Meanwhile Offset has made a desperate bid to get Cardi back, storming the stage during her performance at the Rolling Loud Festival with a sign made of roses that read, "Take me back Cardi."

SOPHIE MONK AND STU LAUNDY

Almost immediately after The Bachelorette finale aired in 2017 Sophie Monk and Stu Laundy were dogged by rumours their relationship was in trouble.
In January, Monk confirmed the couple had indeed parted ways but insisted there had been "no contracts or pressure to stay together".

"I gave it the best shot I could and my intentions were everything I said I was looking for, but unfortunately it just didn't work out," Monk wrote on Instagram. "As much as I respect him, we are just very different people.

Since spitting from Laundy, Monk has moved on with Joshua Gross, who she met and kissed during a flight in mid-2018.

After nearly nine years of marriage, the couple we expected to stay united forever sadly proved us all wrong. The dancing duo took to Instagram in April to announce their separation in a joint statement.

It read: "Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now."

It's safe to say we will never be able to watch Step Up the same way ever again.

LENA DUNHAM AND JACK ANTONOFF

After going on one blind date in 2012 it was love at first sight for the Girls creator and the Bleachers lead singer — or so we thought.

At the start of this year, the couple announced their split after spending more than five years together.

While the news saddened all of us, it sent the internet on a field day with one Twitter user's conspiracy theory going viral.

@Buzzkillary's Powerpoint on the potential relationship of Lorde and Jack Antonoff caught the eyes of so many fans that even Dunham had to comment on it herself and deny it was true.

This one was messy. They may have turned out looks on many a red carpet and they may have had one of the biggest songs of the year, but sadly these two couldn't manage to stay together.

The two breakout stars of 2018 had such a rocky relationship, reportedly breaking up and getting back together multiple times in the year.

But, it looks as if the split is for good with the pair now unfollowing each other on social media.

After seven months of parading their young love all over our social media feeds, the 14-year-old Stranger Things star and 16-year old internet sensation called it quits.

Their breakup was announced in a short and sweet statement appearing on Brown's Instagram Story, reading: "The decision with Jacob and I was completely mutual. We are both happy and remaining friends."
