Artero 2009 Tempranillo RRP $15.50
This is something a little different and it's available through a great Taupo institution, Scenic Cellars. Tempranillo is a lovely, warm red with an inviting meaty character on the nose, backed up by ripe fruit and touches of tobacco leaf. It's rich and rewarding in the glass. A fine example of a style that's well worth a try.

Seppelt Salinger Assemblage Pinot Chardonnay 2006 RRP $22.99
A cracker bully from Australia, one that stands up very favourably to Champagnes twice the price. It has a lovely brioche character on the nose, with a whiff of lemon underneath. On the palate the wine is all about power and elegance, with citrus, apple and bready notes all present. A nice change from the usual sparkling wines.

Matawhero Gewurztraminer 2009 RRP $25.90
Gewurz gets a hard time from the public, partly because it's so hard to pronounce. This isn't hard to swallow, though. It's a delectable pot pourri of lychee, Turkish delight and a hint of rose petals both on the nose and the palate. Broad and mouthfilling, it's a classic example ofa wonderful wine style and a label more people should try.

Ferreira Tawny port RRP $40
The weather is ideal for port just now and this is a great little example. Clean fruit and almonds on the nose with a touch of cherry. On the palate it's fresh, with a gentle sweetness backed by a nice nutty character and a spicy, persistent finish, with echoes of cinnamon and nutmeg. Gorgeous stuff.
