Sir George Fistonich bought Vidal Estate in 1976, a legendary Hawkes Bay producer established in 1905 by Anthony Joseph Vidal. I'm sure Mr Vidal would be thrilled at the quality of the wines more than a century later.
2010 Vidal Legacy Hawkes Bay Chardonnay
From an outstanding vintage, this chardonnay has notes of nutmeg, cashew and lanolin with an underlying minerality and natural acidity. A multi-award winner.
2009 Vidal Legacy Gimblett Gravels Hawkes Bay Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
Coming in at a restrained 13.5% alcohol, this is both drinkable and good with food. Another multi-award winner, this wine delivers dark fruit purity with a ribbon of edgy spice. Already drinking spectacularly, it will continue to develop layers of complexity with careful cellaring. Brilliant with lamb.
2009 Vidal Legacy Gimblett Gravels Syrah
This winner has more gold medals than Valerie Adams. Some syrah producers like to sneak in a little viognier to enhance colour and aroma. Not this classic. One hundred per cent syrah, with no room for compromise. If you want a syrah that looks you in the eye and demands to be taken seriously - this is it. Loaded with plum, violets, white pepper, dark rose and spice flavours, it's finely textured with a long, concentrated finish. A real delight.
