Carrots and avocados are our vegetable buys of the week. Because it is Halloween tonight we are serving up Karena and Kasey's Graveyard bean dip (photographed below), making our avos into guacamole for the kids and layering it in jars with a cheese-topped bean dip and tomato salsa; baked tortilla scary dippers on the side. If you want to be extra healthy you could give the kids a few raw carrot sticks to dip too. As Karena and Kasey say, Halloween doesn't have to be all about sugar and this recipe has cute appeal as well as being nutritious and not too onerous to make later in the day.
Those scary dippers could also work well tonight with Annabel Langbein's raw carrot hummus which is just the right hue for the day. Also see our Halloween treats and party food recipe collection.
Other good vegetable buys this week include asparagus, courgettes, beetroot, cucumbers and eggplants and the quality of all is good.
Strawberries are still expensive but the fruit is nicely sweet as compensation. Apples, navel oranges and lemons are well priced too.
Imported Philippine pawpaws are plentiful and looking good. USA pomegranates and Australian rockmelons ring the changes too.
