FRESH IN: The feijoa season has started, excellent news for most Kiwis and a source of bafflement for many visitors to the country who haven’t been exposed to the charms of the pineapple guava before. Available from March to June,
they are high in antioxidants (such as flavonoids and glycosides), minerals (calcium, phosphrous, potassium and magnesium) and a great source of vitamin C and fibre.
Sticky coconut and feijoa muffins
Autumn’s figs are as plentiful as these hand-picked delicacies ever get and, thanks to the hot summer, are super sweet. There are increasing supplies of quinces in markets now too. Stonefruit season continues with delicious amounts of plums, peaches and nectarines available in store. Watermelons, rockmelons and honeydews are all still widely available and affordable. Courgettes to continue to be a great buy and new season brussels sprouts are looking good. “With autumn fast approaching it’s time to enjoy the last of the summer salads as tomato, capsicum, sweetcorn and avocado season begins to wind down,” says New World Fresh Expert Brigit Corson.
LOOK FOR:cheaper limes. “The local lime season is here, and you’ll find them in store now for a pretty tasty price. Mainly grown in Gisborne, our New Zealand limes are available through till September,” says Brigit. “And in the coming weeks keep a lookout for green and red kiwi fruit, they’ll join the delicious golden Kiwi’s that are available in store now.”
MOVING ON: Apricots — the first stonefruit to arrive — are the first to depart and their season is nearing an end. Cauliflower prices are still variable due to the drought.
