Ka pie: cooking with Sid and Zoya

Last school holidays we took Hospobaby to London. It was warm almost every day and we had a whole city to explore. Zoya’s culinary adventures included some big Michelin-starred names but also British classics at the local pub like fish and chips with mushy peas and vinegar (who knew?), cornish pasties and pies.

Holidays are unfortunately not everlasting and although we were happy to be back home we were also reacquainted with a wet Auckland winter.

After the excitement of unpacking and the nasty jetlag had worn off, we asked Zoya what she thought was the best part of her holiday . . . she was very quick to say Hamley’s the toy store where she spent her lifetime savings of $60.

Then her face fell as she realised Hamley’s was now a long way away.

Sid cunningly diverted her attention to her next favourite holiday memory — eating pie — although this time the baker would have to bake it too. Zoya was intrigued and helped Sid roll out the puff pastry, grease the pie ramekins and brush the egg wash. I won’t say the pie made her forget about the magical toyshop but it did comfort her, and us.

Goes to show Brits and Kiwis both know that nothing beats a good pie (especially with ketchup).
