Making your own breadcrumbs is quick, easy and very satisfying. Not only are you making good use of stale bread, you are ensuring all your meals that require breadcrumbs will bejust that little bit better.
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Heat the oven to 170C. Cut a day-old baguette (orany stale bread) into thin slices.
Step 3: Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until golden and crisp through. You don't want them too dark, so if they are browning quicker than they are crisping up, cook them at a lower temperature.
Step 5: Whizz in a food processor, more or less depending on whether you want fine or coarse breadcrumbs. Store in an airtight jar. Breadcrumbs made out of French stick will keep for weeks.
