Sandy the refrigeration technician
Sandy installs and fixes electrical refrigeration so he’s on the road working at many different sites. He takes his lunch with him because he’s never sure where he will be and what will be available to eat.
7am Cup of hot water and a banana and a peach.
10am Cup of tea and an apple.
12pm I eat sardines out of the can – this or a can of tuna is a quick and easy lunch for me. 1 probiotic yoghurt, because I know that it's good for my stomach. 1 small packet of crisps — I'm English, it's what we do!
7pm Pre-cooked chicken from the supermarket and salad. This is my "fend-for-yourself" dinner because the chief cook is out working this evening. A pint of Guinness, it's that English thing again!
Nadia Lim’s nutrition quick fix
Sardines are full of calcium (from the soft bones you eat) and healthy omega-3 fats so they contribute useful nutrients. However sodium (salt) levels in tinned fish can be high (it’s used to help preserve them) so it would be a good idea to alternate between having some cooked fresh protein e.g. egg, fish, chicken or meat, and the canned/processed. Probiotics are the 'good bugs' that can re-establish our intestinal/gut microflora and improve our digestive system. The most common form of probiotics include Lactobacillus bacteria; live cultures are often added to yoghurts. They help maintain gut health by inhibiting the overgrowth of the "bad bugs". However the concentration of these live probiotics in yoghurts can vary greatly so check the label. Overall, you’ve got some good things going on in your diet, including your fruit intake.
