The menu

was extensive and all of it appealing. From the buttie (bacon and egg with tomato relish on a bap, $12) and bagels with a variety of toppings ($12-$15.70), to the quinoa granola parfait ($12.50) and blueberry waffles with vanilla bean mascarpone and lemon curd ($18). There's also an impressive array of cabinet food.

The look is big, cool and colourful. Three sides of the cafe are floor-to-ceiling glass, which makes it seem light and airy and gives a good view of the large outdoor courtyard. We liked the neon Charlie and George sign on the wall inside.

The food was plentiful. We ordered the creamy mushrooms on sourdough with spinach, tarragon and romano cheese ($18), which was a very generous serve and utterly delicious. We would have licked the plate clean if we could. We also ordered the buttermilk pancakes with honeycomb butter, banana and maple syrup ($15.50). They were sweet, yes, but very moreish.

The coffee is reason alone to come here. Our lattes, made with Kokako beans, were top-notch - hot, creamy and perfect.

The service was good, the waitstaff were attentive and the person at the counter where we paid was charming and friendly.

Overall, we'd be most happy if this was our local. Charlie and George have got everything right - an interesting menu, a modern, welcoming space, and food that delivers.
