Worker tells of masonry falling from landmark

An Auckland office worker in a building opposite the Heritage Auckland said a chunk of masonry came away from a windowsill area last summer.

The worker, formerly of Goodman Fielder, said that early last year, a lump of masonry came off the side of the building at around the third level and fell off the Wyndham St facade, landing on the verandah of the hotel.

Taxi drivers and pedestrians gathered to look, she said.

Gary Jarvis, the hotel's group operations manager, said holes had been cut in the exterior only because remedial work was going on.

Nothing was wrong with the building structurally, he said.
