Well-worn New Lynn bungalow sells for $2m at auction

An older-style and largely original three-bedroom bungalow overlooking the Titirangi Golf Course has sold under the hammer for $2 million.

The property at 12 Tane St in New Lynn - described as a "mature weatherboard home" on a flat 1427sq metre section with entertaining views of the golf course from the deck - attracted five bidders who helped drive up the price.

The house has been in the same family for 60 years and had well-loved retro carpet and wallpaper that seemed to be peeling off in some of the rooms. But the kitchen had been revamped and the polished wooden floors extended to the dining area.

Barfoot & Thompson marketing agent Greg Harper said the property drew developers as well as families, which is why it fetched such a price.

"It's not a precedent. It's a very good price for the old-style house that it was, but a prime piece of big flat land right by the golf course."

The property was advertised as being in a proposed "mixed housing suburban" zoning, making it an attractive proposition for developers.

"The word 'potential' will scream out to you simply because of the stunning location and expansive land area," according to the advertisement.

Mr Harper was unsure of the new owner's plans but said the under bidder had been wanting it for a family home.

In March, the average house price for Waitakere was $739,411, up 18.1 per cent on the previous year, according to Quotable Value figures.
