Tranz Rail fined $15,000

A judge in the Blenheim District Court has criticised Tranz Rail's safety record and fined it $15,000 after a worker had grease injected into his hand at high pressure.

Half the fine is to go to Bruce Graham Broadhurst, who suffered pain, discomfort and some permanent loss of sensation as a result of the accident in July 2000.

Judge Chris Tuohy said Tranz Rail had a poor safety record and a deterrent fine was needed.

The company had pleaded guilty to a charge brought by the Department of Labour that it failed to take all practical steps to ensure the worker's safety.
