Business-minded Auckland students have won a national enterprise competition.
Zenith Games - run by students from St Cuthberts College and one of the 18 companies selected as finalists in the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) - was named the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Company of the Year in Wellingtonyesterday.
The student company invented, manufactured, marketed and sold a word game similar to Scrabble called Take Two. Zenith director Nina Hood said the idea came from a game played by a group of the students while on holiday.
Zenith Games marketed the product to schools and commercial outlets, selling more than 600 games. Eighty shareholders provided the initial $8000 capital.
Hood, who studies arts subjects and is unsure about a future in business, said the company had made $13,000, giving a 70 per cent return to shareholders.
A second prize of $3000, the Todd Corporation Award for Young Enterprisers, was awarded to Bacchus Enterprises from Iona College with their four seasons cookbook for the Hawkes Bay.
The third prize was collected by dAgora, a company from Marlborough Girls College with their Flatters Guide to Life book.
