Power retailers, brewery top Fast 50 list

Two electricity retailers and a brewery are among the fastest growing business in New Zealand and have topped this year's Deloitte's Fast 50.

The Fast 50 index, released this evening, ranks businesses according to their revenue growth over the past three years.

Auckland-based Pulse Utilities NZ took the top spot this year with revenue growth of 2637 per cent, while another electricity retailer PowerKiwi came second with growth of 1916 per cent.

It is the second year running where an electricity retailer has topped the list, with Powershop leading the index in 2011.

"Both Pulse Utilities, and second place PowerKiwi, clearly demonstrate that there is room for independent retailers to achieve extraordinary growth in the New Zealand electricity industry," said Deloitte's Stephen Nicholas.

Nelson-based McCashin's Brewery - which makes the Stoke beer range - came in third with 1836 per cent growth.

Companies in the 2012 index grew New Zealand's economy by $637 million over the last three years and created 1376 jobs, Deloitte said.

Companies had to achieve growth of 154 per cent to make this year's index and at least growth of 480 per cent to make the top 10.

Pulse Ultilities also took out the award for fastest growing retail or consumer products business, while McCashin's won the prize for the country's fastest growing manufacturer.
