The response from Auckland businesses to the first initiatives from Jim Anderton's Industry NZ "jobs machine" has been overwhelming.
Applicants can apply through Economic Development Agencies, the Ministry of Economic Development's regional offices, and BIZinfo centres, which in the top half of the North Island are operated by the Auckland Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The centres ran out of information packs and had to hire extra staff because of the response from business, according to chamber chief executive Michael Barnett.
"Small and medium-sized businesses have latched on to the fact that there is an opportunity out there, that the Government is making some funding available, and demand is high."
The Deputy Prime Minister introduced the first three Industry NZ initiatives last week to a generally positive reception from business.
Designed to stimulate export-earning, job-making and business innovations, the initiatives include an Enterprise Awards Scheme, providing up to $10,000 a year for entrepreneurs. Mr Anderton expects at least 250 awards to be made over the next six months.
A Regional Partnership Programme provides up to $100,000 a region for early-stage planning, up to $100,000 a year for building capability to implement strategic plans, and up to $2 million for major regional measures.
The third component, an Investment Ready Scheme, offers training and information for small business and entrepreneurs.
