Q. I have been in business for several years and have become aware that there is an organisation distributing research on small businesses like mine. Please advise how I can access those publications or research that can help me in my business.
A. David Flett, board member and treasurer of the
Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand (Seaanz), replies:
There is a lot of research done and many business articles written on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which is one of the reasons Seaanz was formed in 1987.
Its aim is to bring together professionals in practice, education and training to promote communication and dissemination of research, ideas and information.
Seaanz is a membership association and is sponsored by organisations such as NZ Trade and Enterprise, Telecom, HP and Microsoft.
Membership of Seaanz automatically entitles you to receive Small Enterprise Research, which is produced bi-annually, and the Quarterly Journal, produced by the International Council for Small Business.
Another organisation researching SMEs is the NZ Centre for SME Research at Massey University. It is located in Wellington, but its website, http://sme-centre.massey.ac.nz, gives information on research already conducted and projects under way.
Seaanz's objectives are to advance the development and understanding of small enterprises by:
* Furthering the development of scholarship, education and research in small enterprise and enterprise management, including encouraging the application of research findings.
* Identifying and developing proposals for programmes to meet small enterprise needs.
* Communicating and disseminating ideas and information on small enterprise and promoting their discussion by the holding of conferences, publishing material and other appropriate means.
* Liaising or affiliating with other associations or bodies with similar objects.
* Making representations and/or providing commentaries to the Government or to other bodies on any matter relevant to the association.
In June 1992, Seaanz became affiliated with the International Council for Small Business.
It is a non-profit organisation devoted to continuing management education for entrepreneurs and small business.
