What support services are available in New Zealand for small to medium-size Maori enterprises wanting to go into business, or are already in business?
Maori business mentor and consultant Pania Wilson replies:
Business in the Community (BITC), a non-profit group, provides a free business mentor programme. It has some encouraging statistics
on its support and encouragement of Maori business owners.
The programme helps to maintain growth as these businesses contribute more to the economy. The BITC freephone is 0508 103-400.
Other business support services or resources for Maori are:
* Te Puni Kokiri, Maori Business Facilitation Service (MBFS) 0800 949-997.
MBFS is a mentoring service provided by Te Puni Kokiri in partnership with Accredited Business Mentors.
It helps Maori to develop a new or existing business. It does not provide money but can identify sources of finance.
The programme helps Maori businesses, individuals, landowners, trusts, authorities, runanga, boards and other groups.
* Ministry of Women's Affairs, Te Ara Kaipakihi.
A resource pack links Government agencies and groups such as BITC, to work with Maori women in business.
Agencies include the Ministry of Social Development, 0800 559-009; Community Employment Group, (04) 915-4300; Inland Revenue Maori community officers, 0800 377-774; and Industry New Zealand, 0800 424-946.
* Maori business networks.
Networks, which have been established throughout the country, have a kaupapa (mission) to strengthen and support Maori in business.
They aim to help business and project planning by directing Maori to professional services; provide training and development through seminars, workshops and courses; represent members at economic development forums; and build a relationship with organisations such as the Chamber of Commerce, IRD and Department of Labour.
They also link professional qualified Maori with employment opportunities and develop programmes such as loyalty cards which provide negotiating power within a collective approach.
