KEY POINTS:
Luxury shower and tapware maker Methven has won a top design award.
The Auckland company was named the main winner at the Design in Business Awards. The awards, organised by the Designers Institute in association with Better by Design, celebrate New Zealand companies who have used design to achieve commercial success and business growth.
Methven transformed from a traditional tap and bathroom valving products company into a cutting edge design-led business when it set up a New Zealand-based design and engineering hub in 1998. It now has a design team of 25 people, led by Kent Sneddon.
Design strategist and award judge David Walker said Methven was impressive in its communication skills, its brand story and the quality and sophistication of its products.
Highly commended awards announced last Thursday were made to Christchurch company AuCom, which makes and exports soft starters for electric motors, and Wellington-based phil&teds, which manufactures inline buggies and nursery equipment.
Previous winners include Formway Furniture and apparel success story Icebreaker.
