Peter Chrisp departs New Zealand Trade and Enterprise for Department of Conservation

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise chief executive Peter Chrisp has been appointed the new director‑general of Conservation.

The Department of Conservation (DoC) announced the appointment today, for a period of five years from July 13.

Chrisp, who has led New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) since 2010, said it wasn’t an easy decision to leave.

“I’ve absolutely loved my time here. What has always kept me motivated is our purpose – helping Kiwi businesses succeed on the world stage and how that contributes to a better New Zealand, and to a better world.

“That same sense of purpose is what has drawn me to the DoC role, the protection and enhancement of New Zealand’s environment for current and future generations.”

Deputy Public Service Commissioner Heather Baggott said Chrisp understands how conservation contributes to New Zealand’s identity, wellbeing and economy.

“Chrisp brings extensive public and private sector leadership experience and a strong track record leading organisations,” Baggott said.

“His leadership aligns well with DoC and its role in balancing environmental, economic and community outcomes.”

Chrisp has also had extensive leadership experience across the public and private sectors in New Zealand and internationally.

Baggott said Chrisp has the experience and judgement to lead DoC and deliver positive outcomes for New Zealanders and our natural environment.

“Chrisp has worked alongside iwi, communities and stakeholders to deliver practical outcomes – and he understands where conservation, community interests and economic activity intersect.”
