New Zealand technology has been chosen for a new high-security system to protect India's Houses of Parliament.
Hamilton's Gallagher Group has won the contract to design and install a perimeter protection system at the New Delhi Government centre.
The company's Indian joint-venture distributor, Ibex Gallagher, will install the "Power Fence"
system, which sends pulses around the security fence every 1.2 seconds and is divided into 30 zones, which are individually monitored.
The company beat several multinational rivals to the contract, which was due for completion next month, said Rick Spencer, Gallagher Security's business development manager for Asia. Mr Spencer declined to say how much the project is worth.
Peter Hobbs, New Zealand's New Delhi Trade Commissioner, said the security project was prestigious and would attract a lot of attention, giving a significant boost to New Zealand's reputation as a supplier of leading-edge technology.
"In a politically sensitive country like India, which has terrorism risks, security is a very high-profile issue," he said. "That, combined with the fact that international technology is very keenly sought after in India, makes this project a particularly important one in terms of establishing New Zealand's credentials."
Gallagher's "Power Fence" technology is already being used at several high-security sites around the world, including military bases in Europe, prisons in Australia and the United States, a diamond mine in Africa and global power and telecommunication centres.
