The Auckland Town Hall last night became a giant lolly house, almost good enough to eat.

Minutes later it was a rocket ship blasting into space.

Mike Mizrahi - the man behind glamorous Louis Vuitton events and the giant inflatable rugby ball in Paris during the last Rugby World Cup - was given the responsibility of transforming the Auckland architectural icon to celebrate the launch of Telecom's new mobile network.

A text message sent over the new XT Network by 11-year-old heart patient Helena Young "flicked the switch" on the display.

Playing on the idea of transformation, Mizrahi said he wanted to make people look twice at a building many went past on a daily basis without an upward glance.

PIGI projectors - the same technology employed at outdoor spectaculars like the Olympic Games ceremonies - were used to create the large still and moving images.

Mizrahi said the entire town hall facade was "mapped" in minute detail in planning for the display.

Three nights of work were needed to complete the installation.

The spectacle can be viewed until Saturday night, from 6pm until 1am.
