Moa brews special edition NZ Gold Ale for Rio Olympics

Kiwi athletes in Rio and watching fans at home can toast our podium finishes with a beer brewed specially for the Olympics.

Moa has produced a limited release cork and cage NZ Gold Ale, fit for any medal-winning occasion.

Cases of the brew are being flown to Rio and will be stocked at the city's Sheraton Hotel bar, where New Zealand athletes will celebrate their medal-winning successes.

The $6.99 a pop bottles will also be available from Countdown supermarkets from Friday, the eve of the Games.

The beer has been made with Motueka hops, with a hint of tropical passionfruit and pineapple as a nod to the Brazilian hosts.

"We are pegging there will be plenty of opportunities to pop a cork in celebratory fashion throughout the Games," Moa chief executive Geoff Ross said.

"We as a nation are behind our athletes, and our NZ Gold Ale is going to be a great celebration of that."

The Olympic brew follows the successful Four More Years beer Moa released for last year's Rugby World Cup.

"We sold out of that very quickly and I expect similar interest in our Olympic ale," Ross added.

Moa is an official partner of the New Zealand Olympics team and has produced just 750 cases of the Gold Ale.

David Nicholls, Moa's head brewer, expects it will be poured with national pride by fans while cheering on the hopefuls.

"The Motueka hops give it that classic New Zealand edge with playful notes of passionfruit and pineapple," he said.

The New-Zealand-owned brewery is also organising a salute to our men and women in black with a stirring haka at Britomart's Takutai Square in Auckland on Friday at 5pm.

The haka will be filmed and played back to the Olympics team at Kiwi House in Rio before the official opening ceremony of the games the next day.
