Petrol retailer Gull opened its doors in Hastings today, undercutting its rivals by 4c a litre.
The petrol was flowing at 89.9 and 94.9 cents a litre for 91 and 96 octane petrol respectively when WoolworthsGull opened at 11 am.
National WoolworthsGull manager Neil Smith-Pilling said the 4c discount was in line with WoolworthsGull's policy of undercutting competitors each time it opened a new store.
He expected other service stations would match Gull's price now the store had opened.
"The important thing for us is that we have led the reduction ... I think customers will appreciate that," he said.
Today's opening brings the number of Woolworths Gull outlets in New Zealand to 23. A Napier outlet will open next month.
Mr Smith-Pilling said the Hastings site employed 16 staff and offered about 3000 product lines including meat, fruit and vegetables, and hot food.
Gull's petrol comes from Singapore and is trucked to Hastings from Tauranga.
The sites are operated by Woolworths.
