Waste Management will increase its green energy capability through the commissioning of three more landfill gas-to-energy plants by the end of the year.
Two generators will be installed at Whitford Landfill in Manukau City and a second generator will be put in place at Redvale Landfill, north of Auckland.
After serving on-site needs, both landfills will export electricity to the grid for local consumption.
Waste Management said that in addition to being environmentally friendly, the extra generators would make money and cut operational costs at the landfill sites.
The decision to expand the green energy market was in line with Waste Management's commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment, managing director Kim Ellis said.
"Our environmental policy commits the company to improving the environment through the services that we offer and to providing them in a manner demonstrably protective of human health and the environment, even if not required by law."
