A penthouse apartment atop a heritage building with million dollar views across Auckland city is for sale for the first time in 14 years.

The 193 square metre apartment sits atop the iconic George Courts building on Karangahape Rd, a former department store built in 1926.

The property boasts three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a view stretching from Mt Eden to the Waitemata Harbour.

The apartment, at 238 Karangahape Rd, was built on the top floor of the former department store when the building was converted into apartments in 1993.

It has a 2014 capital valuation of $1,435,000.

Across two levels, the apartment also features a study, and the master bedroom has an en suite with a spa and private balcony.

The building, home to George Courts Department Store until it closed in 1988, was completed in 1926.

During part of its history as a department store, which occupies the corner of K Rd and Mercury Lane, the roof was used by the Radio Broadcasting Company as a location for its towers.

The building's basement is rumoured to have been used as the Central Air Raid Command for Auckland during World War II and the building has a sweeping central staircase and rooftop tearooms

The apartment will be sold at auction by Harcourts on September 21.
