Genesis Energy's 97,000 North Island gas customers face an average price hike of more than 12 per cent from January 1, the company said today.
Customers with average consumption of 7000 kWh a year would see an average rise of 12.7 per cent, around $71 a year.
The amount of the increase
would vary regionally due to different costs in transmission and network charges incurred in transporting gas.
The rise was a result of increased wholesale and operational costs of supplying gas, Genesis chief executive Murray Jackson said in a statement today .
The gas price increase comes after Genesis increased electricity prices to customers in Wellington, Waikato, Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu and Wairarapa at various times this year.
New gas costs were one of the reasons given for an increase in October of around $77 a year for Wellington electricity customers with an average consumption of 8200kWh a year.
