Christchurch worker dies after being crushed between trucks

A man crushed between two trucks at a Christchurch work site this morning has died in hospital, police have confirmed.

The accident happened at GVI Logistics in Ivan Jamieson Place, near Christchurch International Airport at 10.15am.

A St John spokesman said they sent an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the scene.

The injured man, in his 60s, was rushed to Christchurch Hospital emergency department with serious injuries.

This afternoon police confirmed he has died.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.

"No further details of the deceased will be released until formal identification and the process to inform next of kin has been completed," a statement said.

Seven police vehicles and several officers were at the site, a cul-de-sac in a busy industrial area, this morning.

Detective Sergeant Colin Baillie said the investigation was in its infancy but, "Initial scene examinations indicate a worker has been squashed between a moving vehicle and a stationary vehicle".

"A scene examination has been completed and a number of people who witnessed the incident have been spoken to," Mr Baillie said.

"There are still other people yet to be formally interviewed by police."

A police investigation is continuing.

Officers were examining a Hall's Refrigerated Transport truck and trailer, which appears to have been involved.

A WorkSafe NZ investigation was launched and an investigator sent to the scene.

Mr Baillie earlier refused to say whom the man worked for, saying "there's still family involved".

A spokeswoman for GVI Logistics said, "We've got no comment at this stage."
