Embassy looking to leverage trade networks with China

New Zealand will draw on a network of Chinese alumni to strengthen links with the Asian powerhouse.

The NZ Embassy has worked up a proposal for a network expected to be launched by the Prime Minister in Beijing tomorrow.

Chinese students who have come to New Zealand to either boost their English language skills, or to attend secondary school or university, have been a huge boost to foreign exchange earnings, although the stronger dollar and more competition from other countries has decreased New Zealand's competitive advantage.

Helen Clark is expected to outline proposals to increase the focus on broader vocational training and efforts by New Zealand education providers to offer courses in China.
