Distinguished directors honoured

Two long-serving company directors have been recognised for their exceptional service to New Zealand business.

Dame Margaret Bazley and Paul Hargreaves have been made Distinguished Fellows of the NZ Institute of Directors.

Distinguished Fellow awards are presented annually to Institute members who have sustained a prominent and distinguished career as a director, or who have given outstanding participation and services to the Institute of Directors or eminent or special contributions to the community or business.

Dame Margaret Bazley, DMNZ

Margaret Bazley has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the public service. Her ability to lead and manage a wide range of public sector activities by providing strategic direction, robust policy development and implementation have earned her high regard from staff, peers, and successive governments alike. She has conducted major reviews of government operations, managed critical restructuring, led significant industrial relations negotiations, represented New Zealand in many overseas delegations and mobilised business and community leaders in a variety of fields.

Margaret began her career in the nursing sector, moving on to leadership positions in various hospitals and hospital boards and eventually becoming director of the nursing division of the Department of Health in Wellington. From there she became Commissioner, then deputy chairman of the State Services Commission. She has been Secretary of Transport, Director General of Social Welfare and Chairman of the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FORST). She was Commissioner of the Commission of Enquiry into police conduct and a member of the Royal Commission into Auckland governance. Margaret is currently Chairman of the Fire Service, a member of the Waitangi Tribunal, Registrar of Pecuniary Interests and Chairman of the Review into Legal Aid. She was awarded a DMNZ in 1999 for her significant contribution to the public service and an Honorary Doctorate of Literature by Massey University in 2008.

Paul Moore Hargreaves, ONZM

Paul Hargreaves is an accredited member of the IoD and has provided outstanding service to the organisation through his many years on the Auckland branch committee and National Council, culminating in his presidency from 2007 - 2009.

Paul is a founder and retired chief executive of Datacom Group Ltd, New Zealand's largest domestically owned professional IT services enterprise. He was chairman of Antarctica New Zealand, the HiGrowth Project Trust (a Government-sponsored initiative to develop New Zealand's ICT sector) and is currently chairman of a new start-up company, AllTeams Ltd.

His past directorships include Radio New Zealand, Gallagher Holdings Ltd and Software of Excellence International Ltd. Following the reform of the New Zealand public science sector in 1992, Paul was an inaugural board member of NIWA and chief executive from 1994 to 2002. He is a board member of Safer Families in New Zealand and is chairman of the GI Cancer Institute (NZ) Ltd. He was awarded an ONZM in 2007 for services to business and the community.
