The naked truth about Kiwi travellers

A new survey finds New Zealanders are one of the world's most low maintenance travellers in the world - when it comes to beach holiday habits.

Expedia's Flip Flop report, which surveyed more than 11,000 travellers from 24 countries, found Kiwis spend less time getting beach ready than the global average.

Kiwi beachgoers spend an average of $64 getting prepped for a seaside getaway, $25 less than the global figure and significantly less than those from Mexico who spend roughly $131 - almost double to what Kiwis spend.

While 50 per cent of Kiwi beachgoers say they do nothing to get "beach ready", the most popular way they prepare is by purchasing new swimwear.

Of the remaining, 11 per cent of respondents said they wax to get beach ready, while more than half of those from Mexico, Brazil and Spain say this is a top priority. Furthermore, less than seven per cent of Kiwis say they would postphone a trip to get in shape, 11 per cent behind the global average.

In favour of keeping things low-key, the report found, Kiwis prioritise easy going holiday activities such as walking, swimming, watching the sunset/sunrise, reading and even people watching.

In regards to beach attire, 62 per cent of Kiwis gave the classic speedo a tick of approval and 39 per cent say they are comfortable with nudists at the beach.

More than 12 per cent of Kiwis say they have gone nude at the beach and a further 15 per cent said they have gone to the beach topless. Although findings reveal Kiwis aren't as liberal as Austrian (28 per cent) and German (25 per cent) beachgoers.

Thirty one per cent of Kiwis post photos from the beach holidays on social media, 7 per cent say it's because they want to boast about looking good in swimwear and 3 per cent say they'd prefer to post a nude selfie.

The study was conducted among adults aged 18 years and older.
