Wireless for rural areas says minister

Rural broadband users may soon have a wireless alternative for internet access under Government spectrum allocation plans.

Communications Minister David Cunliffe has announced the release of 77 regional radio spectrum licences in the 3.5 GHz band for commercial wireless broadband services.

Cunliffe said the spectrum allocation was aimed at internet service providers without the resources to operate a nationwide network to offer services to local communities.
