Spark is moving into the home security business with its soon to be launched 'Morepork' smartphone based service.

• Spark's home security system Morepork launched today
• Allows customers to monitor their home remotely via sensors and cameras
• Starter kit costs $999
• A self monitoring plan costs $29.95 per month
• A professional monitoring plan costs $49.95 per month

Spark's home security system Morepork has been unveiled this morning, with the company's broadband customers able to buy and install the systems from $999.

Morepork allows customers to monitor their home remotely via sensors and cameras connected to the cloud using the customers wi-fi.

The system can then be used remotely on a smartphone and any changes or movements in the house including windows and doors opening can be detected. The system also has the ability to send photo or video to the customer to view.

Spark Ventures general manager of Smart Living, Gemma Croombs said Morepork was designed to be an alternative to traditional security and alarm systems.

"When it comes to the smart home, customers want awesome tech that's simple to set up," Croombs said. "So we've taken premium hardware components and designed Morepork so that it's easily self-installed and users choose where cameras and sensors are positioned to suit their home and the things they want to look after."

Customers can tap into Morepork's app at any time to see live stream video, as well as being able to arm and disarm the alarm remotely. Spark said this allowed its customers to check up on whether their house was secure, or whether children had got home safely from school for example.

A participant in Morepork's initial trial John Deane, who lives rurally, said the system offered a lot more than a traditional alarm could.

"It's about the peace of mind you can only get when you can see what's actually happening there," Deane said.

"If something unexpected happens, I'll get an alert, I can instantly jump online and see video or photos of what's going on."

The system included a Security Starter Kit with three door and window sensors, an image sensor and a video camera, with the option to buy additional sensors, cameras or smoke alarms.

Spark home, mobile and business chief executive Jason Paris said the security of the system and protection of users' data has been prioritised when developing Morepork, with customers able to choose who had access to their Morepork and personal data.

"The control is put in the hands of the customer and they can set it up how they want to," Paris said. "They can also allow people they trust - family, flatmates or neighbours - to receive alerts."

Morepork is currently only available on Spark Broadband plans not Spark Digital.
