Glamorous resort wear label Zimmerman, tipped to open in Newmarket.

Glamorous resort wear label Zimmerman, tipped to open in Newmarket.

Prominent international Australian-headquartered fashion brand Zimmermann is said to be coming to the redeveloped Westfield Newmarket although nothing official has yet been confirmed.

Following yesterday's prediction that influential Bohemian-style Camilla - also headquartered in Australia - would open its first New Zealand store there next year, Zimmermann is tipped to be arriving soon.

The upmarket distinctive brand worn by Katie Holmes and Heidi Klum was founded by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann in Sydney in 1991.

From Sydney, a Zimmermann spokeswoman last night denied moves to open on the redeveloped Auckland site: "At this stage, there is no plan to open at Newmarket."

But one Auckland source close to Scentre Group's Newmarket property play said yesterday he was sure Zimmermann would lease space there and that would be a major drawcard because the brand has a distinctive look, strong following and would provide a huge point of difference for what will be one of New Zealand's biggest retail, entertainment, leisure and dining centres.

While he acknowledged there had been no official confirmation, he said both Zimmermann and Camilla were likely to open flagship New Zealand stores in the vastly expanded centre and that was a sure sign that Scentre had huge early success in its leasing programme.

The brands - already prominent in other Scentre outlets throughout Australia - are either thought to have signed up or reached an agreement that they would open big outlets in Newmarket.

A Scentre spokeswoman in Sydney told the Herald last night that the company could make no statements about new retailers planned for the centre: "We have no new retailers to confirm at this stage."

Scentre is unlikely to make any announcements about its plans for the retailers anyway.

When other new brands have come to New Zealand, it has been the retail brands themselves which make the announcements, not their landlords.

David Jones has already confirmed its new flagship department store at Newmarket where about $800m is being spent, with most existing buildings making way for the revamped space, which will feature hundreds of new shops, an Events Cinema multiplex, 2800 carparks and a new Countdown supermarket.

Zimmermann might be a global force, but their founders say they remain loyal to this area of the world.

"While based at home in Sydney, Zimmermann present their ready-to-wear collections each season at New York Fashion Week. They maintain showrooms in Sydney, London, New York and Los Angeles," the company says.

The label gets massive editorial coverage in newspapers and magazines, including Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle, W, Glamour, Nylon and Marie Claire.

The label's foundations hark back to the sisters' bold move to fuse fashion with swimwear and the business refers to "flattering, feminine and stylish swimwear".

From its humble market beginnings, the label is now sold in some of the world's top locations.
